A COUNCIL gift-giving scheme has sent Christmas presents to more than 600 under-privileged people in Darlington.

Among those to benefit from the Giving Tree appeal is a family whose home was burgled.

The thieves stole all the Christmas presents and because the family did not have home contents insurance, they were facing a miserable Christmas.

People are selected to receive gifts by social workers, health visitors and care managers from Darlington Borough Council.

Councillor Bryan Thistlethwaite, cabinet member for adult services, said: "It is really wonderful that so many people will be able to enjoy Christmas this year thanks to the overwhelming generosity of other residents in the town."

Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for children's services, said: "This appeal goes from strength to strength each year and it wouldn't be possible without the generosity of residents and the time and goodwill of so many volunteers.

The Giving Tree Appeal is supported by Alpha Radio, The Northern Echo, Asda, Darlington Council for Voluntary Service, Travelcare, Morrisons, JJ Blair and Sons in the indoor market, and Schotts Removals.
