DARLINGTON will discover the full extent of Gaetano Giallanza's knee injury when the results of a scan are assessed by a specialist today.
The 32-year-old has not played since scoring in Dave Penney's first game in charge at Tranmere in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on October 31.
After knee surgery the former Norwich City striker is back in light training and will learn today whether or not he can step up his rehabilitation.
"Hopefully Tano will get the all-clear," said Penney. "I don't think the current pitch conditions will help him but we should have a better idea when he sees the specialist.
"The last thing we want to do is rush him back into the side when we are already very well covered in that area. We need to build him gently and it will take as long as it needs to."
Penney insists the Swiss striker still has a future at the club and has refuted suggestions that he favours homegrown players.
"I think if you look back at Doncaster we had the United Nations in the changing rooms at times," said Penney.
With Giallanza unlikely to play until the New Year, young striker Shaun Reay will travel with the squad to Wrexham tomorrow. Penney will also include Jack Norton after re-signing the former youth team keeper as cover for David Stockdale.
Defender Alex Janes has returned to the club after sustaining an ankle injury on loan at Whitby Town.
Penney has also revealed that injury-plagued midfielder Phil Stamp may be allowed to leave the club on loan.
The 31-year-old has yet to play a game this season and suffered his latest setback when he pulled up with a hamstring problem on Wednesday.
Penney said: "There is a possibility that Stampy will be allowed to go out on loan.
"It's disappointing because he's worked very hard during the last two or three weeks.
"He's still only 31 and he needs to be playing games, but it just doesn't seem to be happening for him at the moment."
