A BURGLAR fled a house empty-handed after he was confronted by a pensioner.
The man, in his 70s, was sleeping downstairs in his house in Lascelles Park, Darlington, when he was disturbed. He woke to find an intruder in his front room, holding a purse and a camera in a leather case.
The pensioner went to grab the burglar, who then dropped the items and fled.
As it was dark, the householder could not provide a thorough description of the burglar.
The incident happened between 6am and 6.30am on Sunday.
The intruder entered the house by an unlocked door - prompting police to issue a warning to homeowners.
Inspector Craig Dixon, of Darlington police, said: "At this time of year, people often leave doors ajar to thread wires through for outdoor Christmas lights.
"Obviously we strongly advise against this. It is important to keep doors and windows locked at all times."
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call PC Marsay on 0845-6060365, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
