A DARLINGTON resident is urging people to be vigilant after a hoax caller attempted to con money out of her by pretending to be from the charity, Help for Heroes.
The resident from Middleton St George, near Darlington, did not wish to be named, but urged others to be aware of the hoax caller, who withheld their number.
“I got this phone call from a person who said their name was Rachel from Help for Heroes, a charity that needs donations and do I feel able to make a contribution,” they said.
“I am on the telephone preference service and am ex-directory so asked how did you get my number? She said they had an international database and that’s where they got it from, and I hung up.
“I just want people to be aware of it.”
A spokesman from Help for Heroes confirmed the charity does not make any soliciting phone calls asking for donations and urged anybody who has received a similar call to report it to Action Fraud on 0300-123-2040 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
