WORK by 19th Century artist Samuel Tuke Richardson will be on display to the public this month.

The artist and diarist was born in Sunderland in 1846 but spent his adult life in the Darlington area.

A selection of his watercolours, prints and sketches, accompanied by details of local characters and events that inspired his works, will be on display at the Centre for Local Studies, in Darlington Crown Street Library, until the end of the month.

Richardson was related to both the Pease and Backhouse families and worked for many years as a clerk at Backhouse’s Bank.

His artwork features local scenes and often includes horses and hounds, his two major passions.

A talk about the artist’s life and works will be presented by local historian Jean Kirkland on Saturday, October 19. Tickets are £2 each and must be booked in advance. Call the library on 01325-349630 to book a place.
