STAFF from a multi-national company with a base in Darlington have helped clear an overgrown nature reserve as part of a volunteering project.
A total of 11 volunteers from DeepOcean, in Coniscliffe Road, cleared an area of wild vegetation at West Park Nature Reserve, on Wednesday (June 5) morning, to celebrate World Environment Day.
Meadow seed will now be planted, which will grow into pretty wild flowers for the local community to enjoy.
The project was part of Darlington Cares, an employer-led volunteering project, of which DeepOcean, a sub-sea service provider, is a member.
Other members of Darlington Cares include Cummins Engines, Darlington Borough Council, EE, Marchday, the NHS, Sherwoods, Teesside University and Newsquest North-East, publisher of The Northern Echo.
Anne Yare, HR director for DeepOcean and vice-chairwoman of Darlington Cares, said: “DeepOcean really enjoyed rising to the challenge for Darlington Cares.
“More than ten per cent of our employees who are based in Darlington gave up time for the task, which is a great effort during one of our busiest times.
“The outdoor activity was a really good team-building experience and showed just how much can be achieved with teamwork - one of our core values.
“We are looking forward to seeing the new wild flower garden now that we have worked so hard to clear the area.
“We would like to thank Darlington Cares for setting us such a rewarding challenge, the results of which will be enjoyed by so many in the local area.”
