FOUR police officers hope the incentive of supporting a charity close to their hearts will drive them on when they face a gruelling game of golf.

Northumbria police officers Michael Fraser, Craig Robson, Paul Spackman and Hayley Burton will take part the Longest Day Golf Challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Det Con Fraser, from Weardale, PC Robson, from Seaham, PC Spackman, from Chester-le-Street, and Sgt Burton, from Darlington, will play 72 holes of golf at Bishop Auckland Golf Club on Monday. (Monday, June 3)

Many professional golf tournaments are 72 holes and played over four days, like the Masters.

But the team, named The Fellowship Of The Putter, will start playing at 5am and play for around 16 hours straight until they have completed the find round.

The club has asked other players to allow them to play through so they can complete the challenge.

PC Robson thanked the club, in particular captain Andy Graham, for allowing them to play for free and promoting their fundraising efforts.

The team wanted to support the charity because so many people are affected by the disease.

Det Con Fraser’s mother, Linda Dobinson, from Crook, died of cancer almost five years ago and Macmillan hospices cared for two of PC Robson’s relatives in their final days.
