TRADERS at a Darlington market are swapping their regular attire for traditional period dress thanks to the work of some talented volunteers.
To help traders celebrate the Covered Market’s 150th anniversary in style, five volunteers have clubbed together and stitched traditional Victorian outfits for traders to wear during the market’s anniversary on Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8.
The outfits, which include an apron, bonnet, and traditional long skirt, have been created from scratch by market traders Pauline Hope, Frances John, Marie Boynton, Amanda Metcalfe and Tracey Liddle.
Ms Hope, who owns a fabric and alteration stall, said: “We just wanted to get involved and do something fun to celebrate the market’s 150th anniversary.
“Some of the girls in the market can’t sew, so we thought we would get together and make the outfits for everyone.
“It is what the Victorian traders wore and will be a bit of fun. I feel very proud to be a part of the celebrations and hope everyone will get involved in them.”
The outfits will be worn throughout the Victorian-themed celebrations, which include period workshops and musical performances, an ox roast, juggling, old-fashioned carousel and penny farthings.
