FIVE friends from Darlington are taking part in a London to Paris cycle ride to raise funds in the name of a sick family member.

James Salmond, Martin Watson, Chris Marksby, Michael Pearson and Michael Doherty set off from London today (May 24) and aim to be in Paris by Sunday.

Along with a sixth team member, James Richford, they are covering the 240 miles in support of the charity Shine, which provides help and support to individuals and families affected by spina bifida, a developmental disorder affecting about one in every 1,000 babies.

Mr Salmond said: “My niece, Abbie, was born with spina bifida.

“Despite the seriousness of her condition, including paralysis of her lower limbs, through the help of charities such as Shine, she has been able to make huge strides towards living a full and normal life.

“Shine does great work supporting families and individuals affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

“It is a vital source of information and campaign tirelessly to raise awareness of what it means to have a spina bifida.”

The friends have already received donation pledges worth more than £1,200.
