HOSPITAL Staff and patients cycled the equivalent of the coast to coast route and back to highlight the benefits of exercise on mental health.

The 200-strong group from West Park Hospital used exercise bikes in the hospital’s reception area and gym and planned to cycle the 154 miles equivalent to the Whitehaven to Saltburn route.

But they smashed that target within two days, so decided to continue for another 154 miles to cycle a total of 308 miles.

The initiative was organised by Matt Wilcock, a specialist occupational therapist at the hospital who is cycling the actual coast to coast route in July.

It took place during Mental Health Awareness Week which this year promoted the positive impact exercise can have on mental health.
