A PERFORMING arts school has announced plans for a summer school that will lead to a performance of the Broadway musical West Side Story.
Darlington Arts Academy will host its summer classes at Hummersknott Academy between August 3 and 11, where pupils rehearse for three performances of the musical.
To launch its sixth summer school the arts academy has organised a number of activities, starting with a family day at the Dolphin Centre, in Darlington, on Sunday, May 19, between 10am and 3pm.
The day will include acting, singing and dancing workshops based around West Side Story.
The summer school is open to children aged between six and 18, and is suitable for children of all ages and experience.
The week includes a variety of performing arts activities, which are designed to help the cast learn skills, make new friends and build personal confidence.
As part of the Summer School young people taking part will rehearse and perform in the chorus of West Side Story alongside the principal cast.
Rebecca MaGarvie, managing director of Darlington Arts Academy, said: “This is our most exciting summer school yet and we hope to welcome new and existing members of Darlington Arts Academy to be part of what will be a truly amazing experience.
“The sessions on May 19 will really whet the appetite for all the activities we have planned for Summer School.”
