ADVICE for current and prospective landlords will be available at a free forum this week.

The event, run by the National Landlords Association (NLA) together with Darlington Borough Council, is being held at The Studio, in the Dolphin Centre, Darlington, on Thursday (May 16).

Throughout the event, officers from the council and representatives from the NLA will be on hand to offer advice on a number of issues facing private landlords, including tax, non-paying tenants and managing tenancies.

Councillor Veronica Copeland, cabinet member for adult social care and housing said: “This forum is an ideal opportunity for landlords to get together and share any concerns, ideas and their best practice.

“I am delighted that the NLA has chosen Darlington as a venue for this and encourage all local landlords and anyone considering becoming a landlord, to come along and take advantage of the knowledge and experience on offer.”

Members of Darlington and District Private Landlords Association will be available to discuss membership opportunities, and Andrew Perriman, a senior lecturer in law at Teesside University, will also give a presentation.

He said: “Housing is a particularly complex area of law which can cause difficulties for landlords if they are not fully aware of both their own legal obligations and the obligations of their tenants.

“By bringing together landlords at a forum of this nature, my intention is to give a thorough overview of the law with regard to managing tenancies to ensure landlords are getting it right.”

The free event runs from 1pm to 5pm and is open to all landlords or anyone thinking about becoming a landlord in the Darlington area.
