A COUPLE who shared a spark on bonfire night have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Jimmy and Jean Geldard of Meadowfield Road first met at a bonfire party on Victoria Road, Darlington, when they were 12-years-old and instantly became friends.

They courted for four-and-a-half years before getting married at St Mary’s Church, Cockerton on March 28, 1953.

The pair celebrated their diamond day today (Thursday, March 28) and were delighted with their card from the Queen who sent her congratulations to the happy couple.

Mrs Geldard said she was first attracted to her husband thanks to his “very cheeky grin”, adding: “We still enjoy each other’s company.

“We have no secrets and share everything. We have a very happy life together.”

In their 60 years of marriage, the happy couple have watched their family grow with seven children of their own, 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Mr Geldard, 79, began his working life at Darlington Rolling Mills before being called up for national service and then returning home to work at Cleveland Bridge when the war ended.

Mrs Geldard, nee Nicholson, 79, worked at Alexander’s Clothing after she left school when she was 15 and later worked at Northern Dairies on Neasham Road in Darlington.
