POLICE are urging homeowners to make sure their properties are secure as part of a crackdown on seasonal crime.

The advice comes as Darlington police launch their annual Summer Nights campaign, to tackle crime caused by lighter evenings.

As one in three burglaries are caused by opportunistic thieves entering unlocked properties, officers are urging residents to make sure they lock all their windows and doors when leaving their properties.

Acting Inspector Dave Barker, of Darlington police, is also urging residents to invest in good quality locks for sheds and garages.

He said: “As the lawnmowers and strimmers come out for the spring these become an easy target as sheds are often left unlocked.

“People should not leave expensive bikes or gardening equipment in unlocked sheds, or ones with flimsy locks.”

The campaign will also focus on vehicle crime and drivers are reminded to lock their cars and remove all valuables from them.

Acting Inspector Barker said: “Thieves will just try every door handle until they find one that’s open.

“Do not give them the opportunity – lock your car and remove all valuables.”
