DARLINGTON MP Jenny Chapman visited a dementia cafe to show her support for those living with the condition.

The Alzheimer’s Society and The Lawns Care Home in Ridsdale Street, Darlington, have teamed up to open the cafe which is dedicated to supporting dementia sufferers and carers.

Ms Chapman spoke to customers and staff.

Jenny Leeming, dementia support officer for Darlington, said: “The cafe is a really good setting for an informal chat and although it can often be very emotional to discuss dementia, talking does change everything.

"It’s interesting how many people are touched by dementia yet there is still a huge taboo around the subject.

“It often takes a lot for people to come along but once they have got over that first hurdle, we can learn to live positively with dementia.”

Ms Chapman said: “The quality of the facilities available is very impressive and I’m very happy that there is somewhere for those affected by dementia to just come and talk.

“The welcome from everyone at the cafe was terrific and it was a very special visit.”

The cafe at The Lawns Care Home opened earlier this month and another dedicated cafe will open at St Herbert’s Church on April 16.

West Park hospital is also offering drop-in sessions for dementia sufferers and targeted carer support.
