A BAND of decorators came to the rescue when a group of musicians needed help in quick order.

Darlington College students on the Project-U course at the Catterick Skills Centre, based in the North Yorkshire town, grabbed paint pots and brushes when Cockerton Brass Brand in Darlington was in need of assistance.

The historic band, founded in 1870 and one of the oldest in the country, has just had a new practice hall built.

A regional competition was looming and the 40-strong band was desperate to begin final rehearsals in its new accommodation, which was still in need of a coat of paint.

Band member Louise Taylor, who also works at Darlington College, came up with the idea of approaching the students for help.

Volunteers got to work and completed the job in just two days allowing the band to practice.

Band vice chairman Steve Goodwin said: “We had a big competition coming up and couldn’t wait to start playing in the new hall.

“The students ensured a remarkably quick turn around and they have done a really good job.”

Project-U manager Tracey Laycock said: “It’s great that our Level 1 students have been able to give something back to the community and showcase their skills. Some of the students have already secured apprenticeships which is fantastic progression.”

Student Josh Frampton, 17, of Colburn, said: “I really enjoyed helping the band and was proud of the results. I’ve managed to get an apprenticeship and am looking forward to starting a Level 2 in painting and decorating.”
