A GROUP that offers support to older people has celebrated its 11th anniversary.

More than 60 members of Growing Older Living in Darlington (Gold) celebrated their 11th year together at St Cuthbert’s Church hall this afternoon (Monday, March 25).

A number of musicians and guest speakers performed at the event, and members were treated to a raffle and cream teas.

Audrey Lax, who has been a member of the group since it began, said: “It is great to see so many people come along to the celebration.

“Gold is so important as it is a voice for older people in Darlington and how they are cared for, we want to make sure people are getting the right care and support they need.”

Members of Gold recently launched a training scheme to help raise awareness of the importance of dignity for elderly care home residents.

Councillor Veronica Copeland, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for adult social care and housing, compered the event.

She said: “Today has been a wonderful celebration of the hard work that the group have done and a great way to promote their focus on dignity care.

“We have had a great turn out considering the weather, which just goes to show how dedicated the members of the group are. We need time to celebrate the good things, have a chat and share some food.”
