STAFF at a Darlington shopping centre tackled a controlled blaze in an effort to improve fire safety in the workplace.

Employees in the Cornmill Centre’s security, cleaning and management teams were shown how to deal with fire hazards and how to use extinguishers to dampen flames as part of their fire safety training.

Fire officers from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue are delivered the training programme to about 20 staff, with a controlled blaze lit in the centre’s service yard.

Areas of fire safety that the course covered include fire regulations, precautions to take and distinguishing between extinguishers in fighting different fire types.

The programme aims to provide important information and practical skills to prepare workers in the case of an emergency.

It is hoped awareness raised by the training will increase safety in the shopping centre and help to protect the lives of staff and shoppers.
