A RECENTLY REFURBISHED room at a Darlington care home has been named after football pioneer Arthur Wharton.

The Arthur Wharton Suite, at the Lakeside Care Home, in Skerne Park, contains pictures of and panels of information about the former goalkeeper, the first black professional footballer, who started his career in Darlington.

Wharton’s granddaughter, Sheila Leeson, had been due to attend the opening of the suite, but was unable to make it because of snow elsewhere.

Shaun Campbell, founder of the Arthur Wharton Foundation, was present, along with Darlington deputy mayor Charles Johnson and two students from Skerne Park Academy, who had the idea of naming the suite after the footballer.
