COUNTERFEIT phones were on sale in Darlington for more than £1,000, a court heard yesterday (Thursday March 21).

Sunderland man Alexander Dobbin appeared before Darlington Magistrate’s Court accused of selling fake designer phones in a shop in the town.

Blair Martin, prosecuting, said: “The defendant has a number of shops and one has been used to advertise and sell items which, it transpires, are fakes.

“The counterfeit phones bear trademarks including Vertu, Apple, Versace and Louis Vuitton. The Vertu phone had a price tag of £1,200 yet a genuine Vertu phone could cost more than £115,000.

“The high value of the counterfeit goods for sale in this defendant’s shop could have a significant effect on the public if they were bought.”

Mr Dobbin did not enter a plea and the case was passed to Crown Court where he will face seven counts of possessing goods with a false trade mark for sale or hire.
