SCIENTIST Peter Harrison gave a presentation entitled Petrol from the Air at a recent meeting of Darlington Rotary Club.
Mr Harrison, a former president of Darlington Bondgate Round Table, now works for manufacturing company Air Fuel Synthesis.
The Darlington-based firm, which also has a base on Teesside, has produced petrol by merging carbon dioxide from air with hydrogen from water and using electricity from the national grid.
Only a few litres have been produced so far, with investment needed to build a facility capable of producing commercial quantities.
