A YOUNG woman has told of her experiences of working as a missionary in Africa.

Becca Milligan, 21, who works at the Bondgate Methodist Church as a chef, held a talk at the Northgate United Reformed Church about her trip to Uganda in August.

Miss Milligan, from Darlington, a member of a church group Team Major, was one of 12 people who made the ten day trip to Kampala, the Ugandan capital.

In a talk about her experiences, Miss Milligan said the group went to Uganda with no real plan, but they believed that God would show them what to do.

Miss Milligan said: “I fell in love with Africa. It was incredible the friendliness we felt when we were there.

“The first couple of days we helped to build a school. We helped the locals to make the bricks. It was extremely hard work”.

The group also helped out at the Kampala Community Church, which offers an education to some children who can afford it.

She said: “There were about 250 to 300 children all crammed in a small room, a swarm of them.

“They had no English. All they did was smile, stand and look at us. Some of the children were aged four to five, with no family and were looking after themselves.”

Miss Milligan also spoke of how important her missionary work is to her and her plans to return to Uganda in January for more than three months.

She added: “It is the best thing I’ve ever done. Those ten days absolutely changed my life. I had no idea what I was going into, but now I’m a completely changed person.”
