STUDENTS have been inspired to read more thanks a well-known author.

Darlington School of Mathematics and Science students were visited by author GP Taylor as part of their accelerated reading programme.

The initiative aims to motivate pupils of all ages and abilities to read more and more challenging books, to support on-going reading practise and raise literacy standards.

Mr Taylor, of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, said: “I tell stories to children in schools because we have simply stopped telling them.

“Only three per cent of the population actually read for pleasure and I am trying to do what I can to change that, which is to enthuse, inspire and encourage young people to read.

“I want students to understand how important reading is and how it really can change lives.”

His works include Shadowmancer, Wormwood, Tersias, The Curse of Salamander Street and The Tizzle Sisters.

Assistant head teacher Caroline Kelly said: “We wanted to bring some excitement into reading and what better way than this.

“Graham tells his stories with such dramatic enthusiasm which shows them it really can be fun.

“Also through sharing his experiences with them they could really relate to him and understand how important reading is.”

Student Beth Pedelty, 12, of Darlington, said: “The way he tells stories is amazing; it was scary and fun at the same time. I really enjoyed it.”
