DARLINGTON Borough Council’s dog warden team has been awarded a top RSPCA honour for the third year in a row.

It has been given a GOLD Footprint Award in recognition of its work with stray dogs in the borough.

The award covers all aspects of working with stray dogs from collection and kennelling to treating injured or sick dogs and attempts made to find its owner.

One of the most recent and successful elements of Darlington’s dog warden team has been its Facebook page set up in 2011 which posts details of stray dogs found locally.

It has proved hugely popular – 1,345 people have already ‘liked’ the page – and it has enabled many owners to be reunited with their dogs.

The team has picked up 408 stray dogs already this year, 220 of which were claimed by their owners.

The remainder were signed over for re-homing through the Deerness Kennels Stray Action for Dogs re-homing scheme which has a non-destruct policy for healthy dogs.

Bill Dixon, leader of Darlington Borough Council and cabinet member leading on community safety, said: “Our dog warden team does an excellent job in dealing with stray dogs and the RSPCA Award is great acknowledgement of this.”
