DARLINGTON College students baked a giant cake to help Dolphin Centre users get stuck in to some tasty birthday celebrations.

The leisure centre, in Market Place, marks its 30th anniversary on November 2 and Darlington Council organised a number of special events over the last month to celebrate the occasion.

At the council’s request, students on Darlington College’s confectionary and patisserie course cooked up a giant birthday cake which is now being served in slices to groups who regularly use the centre.

Kath MacColl of Darlington College said: “We were really pleased as a college to get involved in the Dolphin Centre’s birthday celebrations.

“It is a bit of a landmark in Darlington town centre and a lot of great things happen there.

“We were delighted with the students’ efforts; they came up with the design concept by themselves and made a great cake which should serve at least 100 people.”

Other birthday treats over the last month have included meal deals for children, the town centre clock being lit up by blue light and a competition giving anybody born on the day of the centre’s birthday the chance to win free swimming sessions.
