A MAN has been left with critical injuries after being hit by a van while crossing the road in Darlington.

It happened shortly after 11pm on Sunday in High Northgate outside the Snax 24 service station and the 63-year-old man sustained serious injuries to his chest and stomach when he was hit by a white Citroen Berlingo van.

The man, who lives in High Northgate, was taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where his condition is classed as critical but stable.

Police believe the van had travelled into High Northgate from North Road and then Station Road, possibly being followed by another vehicle, a white Ford Transit van.

Both the driver of the Berlingo, a 50-year-old man from Thornaby and the driver of the Transit, a 20-year-old from Evenwood were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

They were released on bail until mid-December after being interviewed by officers.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident and Sgt Neil Fuller said: "Our initial enquiries suggest the two vehicles had been travelling, possibly at high speed from the Heighington area into Darlington.

“We would like to hear from anyone who might have seen these vans as they headed into the town centre, or any witnesses to the accident itself.”
