FOURTEEN gold medals out of 16 is not a bad result and that’s exactly what members of a taekwondo club achieved at a recent competition.

The 16-strong squad from Darlington and Weardale Chung Do Kwan taekwondo club travelled to Liverpool to compete against martial artists from across the UK.

They narrowly missed out on the overall team trophy.

Instructor Katey (CORR) Wallace was delighted with their performances.

She said: “It has given them all a lot of confidence and is a great boost for club morale.

“When you train in your local club you have no real idea of the standard of the rest of the clubs.

“It’s only when you get out there and compete you can compare and to get 15 gold medals out of 17 speaks volumes. I’m very happy with every one of them.”

Gold medal winners from Darlington and Weardale were: Katey Wallace, Viktoras Kostinas, Andrew Vipond, Daniel Graham, Anna Thompson, Sara Graham, Harry Evans, Chris Evans, Leah Moss, Connor Holmes, Tony Graham, Andrew Barley, Louis Welch and Keira Moles.

Silver medalists were Natasha Kerr and Kim Roberts.

The club is now working towards other competitions later in the year.

Free taster sessions are held at the Education Village, in Darlington, and Frosterley Village Hall.
