FIREFIGHTERS helped to haul an injured man up a steep embankment after he was hurt in a freak accident.
The casualty, who is thought to be aged in his early 20s, was running down the hill at speed towards a canoe on the River Gaunless, near Bishop Auckland, when he fell and cut his shin on a broken sink, which had been dumped on the embankment.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were called to Rosemount Court, in South Church, just after 1.10pm today and two appliances from Bishop Auckland attended the scene.
The stricken man was placed on a stretcher known as a Reeves Sleeve, which the fire service hauled up the embankment using lines in a lifting and lowering system.
He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not thought to be serious.
