A HIGH street was handed over to some of the world’s top rallycross drivers and their supercars today (Sunday, October 21), ahead of the British Grand Prix.

Many leading names in the world of motorsport headed to Northallerton.

They were there for a pre-race demonstration of some of the cars that will compete in the MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix will at Croft Circuit near Darlington next week.

The North Yorkshire High Street was closed off for the afternoon, allowing the public to see some of the cars in action.

Driver Kevin Procter, from Leeming Bar was among those at the demonstration. He recently finished tenth in the European championships.

One of the event’s promoters, Richard Place, said it was the first time that a rallycross demonstration had been transported to a high street.

“They’ve never done a demonstration in a street before, it’s the first time it’s ever happened,” he said.

“We’re trying to raise the profile of the sport and motorsport in the area.

“People don’t realise it’s big business here. There’s a lot of motorsport preparation businesses round here that supply fuel, tyres and other support. Plus there’s Croft circuit up the road from here.

“It puts a lot of money into the local economy.”

The cars all have standard road car body work, but everything else about the vehicles is modified for racing.

The event will be held at Croft Circuit on Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28. Tickets are £18 for the weekend, or £8 for Saturday and £15 for the grand prix on Sunday.
