A MAN has been arrested following an assault in a Newcastle nightspot.

Police were called after trouble flared just before 1am today (Sunday, October 21) at Bar Bannatyne at The Gate in the city centre.

There had been a disturbance inside the bar and a door supervisor who intervened was injured during the incident.

He is receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary for a suspected fractured skull but his condition is not life-threatening.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and is in custody.

Police are appealing for anyone who was inside the bar who witnessed the disturbance and subsequent assault, or who has information about what happened, to contact them as soon as possible.
