A MOTORCYCLIST has been airlifted to hospital suffering serious injuries after a collision on a rural road this afternoon (October 17).

Emergency services were called to Middleton St George, near Darlington, at about 2pm, after reports of a collision between a motorcycle and a car.

The rider of the motorbike was airlifted to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, suffering suspected pelvic, leg and arm injuries, said as spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

He was thought to have been in a serious condition.

The crash, which involved an Audi car and a Suzuki motorcycle, happened close to the entrance of the St George's Gate housing development.

The road remained blocked as collision specialists investigated the crash.

It is understood the collision happened on a blind corner.

Jim Jarvie, vice-chairman of Middleton St George parish council, was caught in the traffic that built up following the crash.

He said: "I hope the man is alright.

"There was a traffic review in the village a few years ago, which pointed to this corner as a danger area."
