SOLDIERS will scrum down with a civilian rugby team to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.

Catterick Barbarians, a team of soldiers from Catterick Garrison, in North Yorkshire, will play an exhibition rugby match against Clems Pirates, a group of North-East players, to support the annual Royal British Legion (RBL) fundraising drive.

Sergeant Andrew Stevenson, head coach of the Catterick Barbarians, said: “It’s going to be an excellent evening of rugby and will also raise money for a great cause.

“Many of our players have returned from recent tours in Afghanistan and sadly a lot of them have had close friends who have sadly passed away or been seriously injured on operation there.

“The RBL is a close charity to us and means a lot to the players.”

The match will take place at Durham City Rugby Club, on Green Lane, Durham, on Thursday, October 25, at 7pm.

There will be no entry charge but spectators will be encouraged to make a donation to the Poppy Appeal.
