PHOTOGRAPHS exploring life working underground in the region’s coal mines have gone on display.

Underground Works: Photographs of Life in the Coal Mines of County Durham in the 1940s is at the Durham World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, in Owengate, Durham City, until Wednesday, October 31.

Curated by Neil Bage, the collection features images printed from negatives recently rediscovered in Tynemouth.

The centre is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily. Admission is free.
