AN eyesore site in the heart of York could at last be transformed - after 30 years of standing empty.

The Graham Family Trust has presented its proposals for transforming the White Swan Hotel, on the corner of Piccadilly and Coppergate, which could see new shops on the ground floor and would involve 14 apartments being created on its three upper levels.

The hotel was built in 1912 and the Trust had originally considered demolishing and rebuilding it, but the possibility was not pursued.

And, if approved by City of York Council, the scheme would allow the ground floor of the building to be used for retail units, financial services outlets, restaurants or bars, or a mix of these uses.

A decision on whether the refurbishment can go ahead is expected to be made by planners before the end of the year.
