TWO shop workers turned themselves into Greek statues for a day to raise money for a national cancer charity.

Debbie Wears and Eric Hoath, who both work at the One Stop shop and post office in Yarm Road, Darlington, swapped their normal uniforms for togas and flip-flops and stood still from 9am to 5pm to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

They took it in turns to stand on a plinth outside the shop on Saturday, while staff sold cakes and tea and coffee to passersby.

Ms Wears said: “We were all wanting to do something a bit different for the Macmillan coffee morning fundraiser, so we came up with this idea.

“It was quite tough standing still for that amount of time and some children would try and make you laugh as well, but that was all part of the fun.

“There are traffic lights just outside our shop so it was funny watching the reaction from the drivers as they queued up.

“Every now and again I’d wink at them, which they thought was brilliant.”

The pair have so far raised £202 for the charity, while three members of staff from the shop are running in the Newcastle Stampede on Sunday to collect funds for the British Heart Foundation.
