A PARALYMPIC torchbearer, who hopes to compete in the 2016 games, has had a helping hand from a North-East business.

Lee Maddison, from Sedgefield , County Durham, made history when he followed in the footsteps of his Olympic torchbearer grandfather by taking part in the Paralympic torch relay last month.

The 25-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, was selected by Lloyds TSB in recognition of his achievements in the disability sport of boccia, which is similar to bowls. His mission to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio has been made a little easier by Teescraft Engineering, of South Church, near Bishop Auckland .

The company, which manufactures precision components for the automotive, oil and other industries, created an adjustable stand for use in boccia.

He and his grandfather, Bill Routledge, 80, thanked Rob Yorke and his team at Teescraft, by letting them pose for pictures with their Olympic torches.

Mr Routledge, from Bishop Auckland, said: “The ramp has made a big difference and we are very grateful that a local firm has helped us.”

Mr Maddison plays for England and also helped to launch a boccia club at Sedgefield Community College.
