A MAN jumped in fear from a bedroom window at his home after feeling threatened by his sister’s former partner.
The victim made the escape bid after David Ian Edwards entered his home in an aggressive manner, late at night.
Durham Crown Court heard that he suffered fractures to both heels on landing and had to hobble in agony to a neighbour’s home to raise the alarm.
Martin Towers, prosecuting, said both the victim’s feet were in plaster for a number of weeks, leaving him wheelchair- bound, and he then had to use crutches for several months.
Mr Towers said the 33-year-old has moved into single storey accommodation because of his injuries, for which he still takes pain killers.
Edwards, 29, of Bluebell Close, Newton Aycliffe , County Durham, was yesterday jailed for 14 months after admitting unlawful wounding.
Mr Towers said the incident arose amid ill-feeling on Edwards’ behalf towards the family of his former partner, after the break-up of their relationship.
“The defendant was said to have taken it badly and blamed her family for it.”
Mr Towers said Edwards was jailed in July last year for making a knife threat to his ex-partner’s father, and was released in November.
The court heard Edwards turned up at the home of his former partner’s brother, in Newton Aycliffe, late on Saturday, January 7.
Mr Towers said Edwards went in uninvited and began pushing the householder in an aggressive manner.
“He felt sufficiently alarmed to feel the only way to escape was to jump out of a first-floor bedroom window.
“On doing so, he suffered serious injury to both heels.”
Jonathan Walker, mitigating, said: “This was deplorable, ugly behaviour, but since then things have begun to pick up in his life, reflecting the defendant in a more positive light.”
But Judge Christopher Prince said: “The fact that this man jumped from that window causing serious harm to himself reflects the fear you placed in him.
“This was thuggery which has clearly left him severely adversely affected.”
Judge Prince also made a restraining order preventing Edwards contacting the victim or his father indefinitely.
