A horse which was stuck in mud up to its stomach has tonight been rescued by firefighters using a sling.
Fire crews from High Handenhold and Bishop Auckland were called to the scene on the Stanley to Oxhill road, near Stanley, at 6.34pm.
They arrived to find the horse - which is 17 hands high - firmly stuck in a bog.
A vet also attended to check the animal's welfare.
