A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with drink-driving following a multi-vehicle pile-up on a diversion from another accident.

North Yorkshire Police arrested the man, from Richmond , in connection with a sixvehicle incident on the B6271 at Great Langton, between Northallerton and Scorton, on Wednesday. He will appear at Northallerton Magistrates’ Court on October 5.

The accident happened at 8.10am as traffic was diverted from the A1 dual carriageway, just south of Catterick , after three trucks collided hours earlier, killing one of the drivers.

Police have not yet named the dead man but he is believed to be from the Stockton area.

Another of the drivers, a 58- year-old man from North Lincolnshire, remains in a critical, but stable, condition in Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The northbound carriageway of the A1 remained closed for about 17 hours as a complex clean-up operation took place following the accident. The trucks had spilled gas canisters, paint and batteries and the road had to be resurfaced.
