AN appeal was made today for information from witnesses to a fatal accident involving a single car in a residential street.

A teenager was killed and another man suffered serious injuries from which he remains in a critical condition today, following the collision in Mount Pleasant, between Washington and Penshaw on Wearside , last night.

Police said a Suzuki car, “for reasons yet to be established”, left the road, in Ashdale, colliding with three parked vehicles on a driveway.

A 19-year-old man suffered serious head injuries and was declared dead at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Another person in the car, a 23-year-old man, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary where he is said to be in a critical condition.

Two other men, aged 25 and 34, were arrested in connection with the collision. The 25-year-old was treated for injuries at Sunderland Royal Hospital, but the 34-year-old was uninjured.

Police closed the road while inquiries took place, and it was finally reopened at 4.25am following investigation and vehicle recovery.

Inquiries into the incident were continuing today to establish the exact circumstances of the accident, although it is believed all four men were in the car at the time.

Anyone who witnessed the accieent, at 8.56pm last night is asked to ring the non-emergency line, on 101, extension 69191, for the attention of the Northumbria force road safety unit.
