ROY HODGSON expects to see John Terry’s warrior instinct come to the fore during England’s Euro 2012 campaign, which starts this evening against France.

Terry’s presence within the England squad has been the subject of intense debate.

There are some who feel he should not have been picked once his court hearing into allegations he racially abused Anton Ferdinand, which Terry strenuously denies, was put back until July.

Others feel Terry’s presence is responsible for Rio Ferdinand’s absence, no matter how often Hodgson argues to the contrary.

There is little doubt though, Hodgson has stuck his neck out to have Terry, 31, involved.

And he is certain that faith will be rewarded.

“We all know John’s qualities, we all know what a good centre-half he is and what a warrior he is,” said Hodgson.

“We also know he is capable of taking other players with him, not least of all his teammate Ashley Cole, with whom he is used to playing.

“I’m just hoping John will show all the qualities I have seen from him over many years with England. I’m convinced he is determined to do that. He feels this is a great opportunity to show the very best of what he can do.”

Meanwhile, Hodgson has confirmed his players will not be following France’s lead by using ice jackets to cool down in Donetsk today.

It is forecast to top 30 degrees at the Donbass Arena scheduled to be at its 50,000 capacity, give or take a few hundred seats still to be sold, it is likely to be even warmer on the pitch.

France coach Laurent Blanc has instructed his players to wear “Cyro Jackets” at half-time where ice can be inserted into eight specially designed pockets.

Hodgson’s players will not be doing the same.

“No,” said the England manager. “We’ll deal with the heat as best we can.

“It does get hot in England from time to time.

“The heat is a factor for all the teams playing in the Ukraine but it’s important we don’t put too much emphasis on conditions.

“It plays a slightly bigger role in the earlier game, but the bottom line is that it’s the same for both teams.”

Defender Joleon Lescott acknowledged the ferocity of the heat not long after landing following a two hour flight from Krakow, which had been significantly cooler.

“The heat is no joke as well,” he said on Twitter.
