POLICE are investigating after a calf was found decapitated on a farm.
The animal was found at the farm in Whickham, Gateshead this morning.
Police believe the calf was killed between 8pm on Tuesday and 8am today at the farm near Derwent Walk.
The news comes just a day after the RSPCA released a report highlighting the rising tide of animal cruelty in the region, with incidents up by more than 12 per cent in the North last year.
Sgt Jeff Purves of Northumbria Police, described it as an “unpleasant experience” for the animal’s owners.
“We ask anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact police,” he said.
"We want to reassure the public we are doing all we can to trace those responsible."
Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
