A SCHOOL has announced its new name as it becomes the only specialist humanities college in its area.
The former Norton School, in Stockton, will now be known as The Norton School Humanities College, following its successful bid for specialist college status.
Building works will begin this month to modernise the building, and will include a community-based classroom and a new ICT suite.
An official launch of the humanities status will take place next summer, when all building work is completed.
The school's director of humanities, Kirsty Banks, said: "This marks a new chapter for the school promoting global citizenship, independent learning, literacy and a positive approach to learning."
Councillor Alex Cunningham, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I am delighted to see Norton School move to a new stage in its development and wish the staff and pupils every success as they bid to capitalise on their new status."
The college is holding an open evening on Thursday, October 12, from 6pm to 8pm.
