A man denied today that he assaulted an MP who was pelted with eggs at a Remembrance Sunday parade.

Terry Dixon, 54, from Liverton Avenue, Middlesbrough, is accused of attacking the town's veteran Labour MP Sir Stuart Bell on November 13.

The community activist was grabbed by the elected mayor of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon, a former detective dubbed Robocop for his tough stance on crime, following the incident and was held until police arrested him.

Dixon, who has a long-running dispute with the MP, denied assault during a brief hearing at Teesside Magistrates Court.

His trial will be held on February 13 and he was granted bail on condition he does not contact Sir Stuart.
