MASKED robbers escaped with an ornamental gun and jewellery after tying up and terrifying a couple in their own home, police have revealed.
Police initially believed that nothing had been taken from the couple’s home in Carlton, near Stockton in the Monday night raid.
Detectives today said they do not believe the robbery was linked to the fact the couple, in their mid-60s, own a gun dealership and renovation business within the grounds of their property.
Up to five masked men smashed their way in to the couple’s home brandishing a crowbar and tied them both up.
Eventually the pair managed to break free and raise the alarm shortly before 10pm. It is thought their ordeal lasted about half an hour.
Armed officers and police dogs descended on the small village and the force’s helicopter was scrambled but the gang had already got away.
Detective Sergeant Stuart Hodgson said: “Whilst we know that one gun was stolen, this was an ornamental gun and would only be used for decorative purposes.
“We do not believe that the burglary is linked to the fact that the victims run a gun dealership and again we would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to police.”
Anyone with any information is urged to call DS Hodgson on 01642-302226.
