BEFORE I dash to Heighington WI, where I am curing insomnia with one of my local history talks, a quick apology and a photograph which I hope you will linger over.

This morning's Memories contains a couple of mistakes. While doing my Radio Tees interview at lunchtime, I spotted an appalling grammatical howler but I am not going to confess to that publicly. However, the public have noticed my slip of the fingers on the Page In History. The first Remembrance Day was obviously held on November 11, 1919, and this was partly because some people had been sickened by the way others celebrated the armistice of November 11, 1918. When the war ended that day, there was dancing in some streets. I can understand this relief, but it was deemed by some to be an inappropriate way of marking the sacrifice of the servicemen and so two minutes of silence was held on November 11, 1919.

This morning's Memories also contains more on those wonderful women of Wheatley Hill. While I was doing a bit of tidying up - nothing too radical - I came across a photo from the same time, August 30, 1969, when all women were Les Dawson.
