VETERAN DJ and broadcaster Sir Jimmy Savile has died.

The 84-year-old was found at his home in Roundhay, Leeds, just after midday.

It is not known how Sir Jimmy died.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers were called to a house in Leeds.

The spokesman said: "Police were called at 12.10pm today to the discovery of a man's body at a house in Roundhay, Leeds.

"The body of a man in his 80s was found at the property. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death."

The star, who presented the first episode of Top Of The Pops as well as his long-running show Jim'll Fix It, was admitted to hospital suffering from a bout of pneumonia in September.

Presenter Dave Lee Travis told Sky News Sir Jimmy was a "larger than life" character, adding: "We are all going to be worse off without him around."

Sir Jimmy started his working life as a miner in his native Yorkshire before running a series of clubs and working as a wrestler and DJ.

He has raised millions for charity and for many years was a regular marathon runner in support of good causes.

He had a long association with the North Yorkshire resort, Scarborough, and had a flat in the town.

In 2005 he was awarded the freedom of the Borough of Scarborough.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said: "It's quite tremendous to be awarded the freedom of the borough.

"I've been living here for 40 years, but I first came to Scarborough as a babe in arms in 1928, carried by my mother.

"Scarborough is one of my very best friends and that is what I feel when I look at the town, the people and the sea."
