A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital after the car she was travelling in was in collision with a chemical tanker.
The incident involving one car and a chemical tanker lorry occurred just before 4pm on Saturday in Newton Aycliffe.
Firefighters spent some time cutting the 45-year-old female passenger from the car before she could be taken to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance.
The helicopter took five minutes to fly the woman, who was suffering head and abdomen injuries, to James Cook University Hospital on Teesside.
Her condition upon arrival at hospital was described as stable and her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The tanker was empty at the time of the collision and it is not believed the chemical container was breached by the incident.
The driver of the tanker did not require any medical treatment.
