TWO major roads have been closed after a crop sprayer overturned on a roundabout spilling herbicide across the road.

Firefighters were called to the roundabout between the A68 and A688 at Hummerbeck near West Auckland, County Durham at about 2.45pm this afternoon.

They found a crop-spraying tractor had overturned spilling its load of 3,500 litres of chemicals.

The two roads approaching the junction remain closed as crews from Bishop Auckland and officers from the Environment Agency attempt to stop the herbicide contaminating nearby waterways.

The majority of the spill is believed to have been contained in a roadside drainage pond which is due to be pumped out by the Environment Agency later tonight.

It is believed that no-one was hurt in the incident.
