A DRIVER has been killed and a teenage woman seriously injured after their car careered off a country road, smashed into an embankment and flipped over in a field.
A white Citroen Saxo, travelling from Northallerton towards Richmond on the B6217, went out of control on a hill-top bend near the Canada Fields caravan park and fishing lakes, at 5.20pm on Saturday.
The man, aged 32, from Herefordshire, who had been driving, was thrown from the car after it hit the embankment and died at the scene.
The woman passenger, who is 18 and is believed to live locally, suffered serious head injuries and was flown by the Great North Air Ambulance to The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.
A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the driver’s side of the car had been completely crushed.
No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.
A resident, whose home overlooks the crash site, said it was amazing the teenager had not been killed as the car had flipped a number of times at high speed.
He said the stretch of road had been a notorious accident black spot until North Yorkshire County Council introduced sharp bend warning signs a few years ago.
Anyone with information is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 0845-60-60-247.
